What the petition asks
My springer spaniel was on lead on her way home when a malamute, escaped from their home, and attacked her causing horrific injuries. She fought for her life for six days, bit unfortunately her wounds were too severe for survive. This has been the second reported attack from the same dog.
The same dog had attacked a golden retriever previously causing life changing injuries. This really needs to be addressed. A lot of dog owners are responsible but a few generally have no idea on the risks their dogs may be to others. Too many people are losing their beloved pets due to the careless attitudes of some reckless dog owners. Even if all dogs had to have pet insurance, this would go someway to help with vet bills etc. Obviously can not replace our beloved girl but we should be able to walk our dogs without fear.
Why it was rejected
It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.
It's already against the law for someone to allow a dog to be out of control in a public place. This could include allowing their dog to attack another animal. You can find out more about this here:
https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public
The owner can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to 6 months (or both) if their dog is dangerously out of control. They may not be allowed to own a dog in the future and their dog may be destroyed.
You can find out how to report a dog here:
https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/report-a-dog
We're therefore not sure what additional action you'd like the Government or Parliament to take.
You could start a new petition calling on Parliament to change the law, to require all dog owners to have insurance for their dog, if that's what you would like to happen.
