Tougher sentencing for those who attack emergency services personnel
Rejected

What the petition asks
Too many times we hear of Police Officers and Paramedics who have been physically attacked by those they are arresting or helping. If it gets to court the sentencing is far too lenient.
We need tougher sentencing to show these actions are not acceptable.

The police uphold the law and paramedics try and save people’s lives.
Why it was rejected
It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.
Parliament is already considering changing the law on this issue, so we're not sure exactly what further action you'd like to see.
The Government supports the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill, which is due to have its final parliamentary stage in April 2018. The Bill plans to introduce a new offence of attacking an emergency worker while they are doing their job and increase the maximum sentence.
