Make non payment of child maintenance a criminal offence

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

Child neglect should include estranged parents non payment of child maintence. Estranged fathers and mothers should be forced by law regardless of employment status to pay a minimum financial contribution towards their offsprings upbringing and prison should be a consequence of non compliance
If for example a father or in some cases a mother is unable to provide some kind of contribution towards a child or children's upbringing then there should be consequences. If the parent with custody neglected to feed or clothe a child it wouldnt go unnoticed. I speak for all single parents who break their backs to provide for their children without support from the estranged parent who has as much parental rights but far less parental responsibility. Its simply unfair. Take away their p.rights

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Prison can already be a consequence of failing to pay child maintenance, so we're not sure exactly what you would like to change.
