Cap the price of UK train fares so they are in line with other major economies

What the petition asks
I ask the government to consider taking action against the astronomical train fares facing the British public. We pay significantly more than other major global economies. The train should be a cheaper alternative to driving for the sake of the environment and the future of the planet/mankind.
According to The Independent we spend "six times more on fares than peers in Europe with 14% of our income being spent on monthly season tickets...significantly higher than the 2% seen in France, 3% in Germany and 4% in Spain."
Fullfact.org says "the cost of an annual season ticket covering long-distance travel can exceed £3000, the equivalent of over £1000 more than the next dearest country: the Netherlands. "
