What the petition asks
British company Vedanta Sterlite Copper begun construction of a new 4 million tonne/year smelter, almost doubling capacity. The existing smelter is believed to have continuously polluted the water and air since 1996, causing respiratory, dermal infections and other illness, particularly in children.

The Env Impact Assessment is believed to be a sham. Coastal regulations forbidding the location of industrial plant within 25km of the Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve were ignored. Reports of illegal waste dumps and port data reveal the use of highly contaminated copper concentrates and indicate that waste has been disposed of in the Gulf of Mannar.
