Reveal identities of children that are charged with gang and knife related crime
Rejected
21 signatures
What the petition asks
Children that are charged with gang, drug and or knife related crimes should have their identities revealed to the local community.
Why it was rejected
It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.
We can't accept your petition because decisions on naming people who have been charged with crimes are a matter for the police and courts which are independent of the UK Government or Parliament.
In cases where reporting restrictions are in place the police are obliged by the law not to name suspects. Reporting restrictions are automatic for all young people tried in a youth court. It would be for the court to decide whether to apply restrictions where a young person was tried in an adult court, which would cover most serious offences.
You could start a new petition asking for the law to be changed to allow courts to make decisions on reporting restrictions relating to all drug or knife related crimes involving young people.
