Introduce a climate change levy on beef and dairy products

Closed 38 signatures

What the petition asks

The livestock sector has overshot safe limits and in particular dairy and beef production have been identified as major contributors to climate change and biodiversity loss.

Also over-consumption of these products is a fact of our unhealthy lifestyles, giving us obesity and coronary heart disease
A levy on these products will increase Treasury funds whilst making us more healthy whilst helping us achieve emissions targets. A win-win situation, that might also yield a reduction in the burden on the NHS similar to that brought about by reduction in smoking.

Tax receipts could be used incentivise livestock farmers to turn foresters, turning their land over for reforestation which would improve biodiversity and local air quality and allow our countryside to return to its natural state.
