What the petition asks
EAL children who have been in school for less than four years should be allowed to opt out of SATs. They and EAL children who have been to more than one school have to take SATs and reach the same standards as English-speaking children who have been to school since nursery or reception.
At the moment, EAL children need to become fluent in 2 years only and catch up on the English curriculum at the same time.
It is also makes it difficult for schools with a large influx of new arrivals to achieve national standards and therefore these schools struggle to become “good” or “outstanding”.
The government should allow at least 4 years for these pupils to catch up (time children spend in KS2)!
