Make it UK law that food producers take back their waste packaging.

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

There is currently no legal directive for food producers and manufacturers to take back and deal with the materials they have produced for their products. This petition is to call on government to put in place such a directive and make it law similar to the 2012 WEEE directive.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure exactly what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

Food packaging producers do have obligations in respect of the packaging they produce. They have to demonstrate evidence of waste packaging recycling and recovery of a sufficient quantity to met this obligation. They can do that directly or by signing up to a compliance scheme. You can find more details here:

You could start a new petition to replace these arrangements with an obligation to provide a "take-back" service like those operated under the WEE directive if that's something you would like to see happen.
