What the petition asks
The British Legion has estimated that there are currently about 6,000 homeless veterans in the UK. Many of them are suffering PTSD and other mental health problems following combat, or struggle to adjust to independent living after service.
Those who serve should be supported, not abandoned.
Those who serve should be supported, not abandoned.
Portsmouth city council has already adopted this policy after the Armed Forces Act made provision for giving Veterans specific privileges. To honour the armed forces covenant Parliament must impose a duty on all local authorities to place homeless veterans at the head of the queue for housing.
None who serve should suffer the indignity of homelessness. When we see how veterans are forgotten, there is little wonder why recruitment is so low.
