Make it compulsory for brands to display symbols of allergens on food packaging.

Closed 38 signatures

What the petition asks

In the past year, there have been numerous allergy-related deaths and life-changing incidents caused by mislabelling or unclear food packaging. This means there are approximately 2 million people in the UK living with a diagnosed food allergy risking a reaction every time they shop.
In the 20 years to 2012, there was a 615% increase in the rate of hospital admissions for anaphylaxis in the UK
(Turner, Paul J., et al, 2015)

A clearer labeling system is needed for food packaging to highlight the inclusion of any of the 14 main allergens to inform the buyer and reduce risk.

This system would also simplify the shopping process for those who do not speak English as a first language, the vegetarian & vegan communities or those who choose to exclude meat for religious purposes.
