Petition · past parliament

Protect public and gifted land from misuse, alteration or monetary gain.

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

We wish for parliament to put laws in place that will protect land belonging to the public, land gifted to the people or donated to charities. We believe the law should protect the true intention of the donors legacy and stop legal interpretations which alter the area or it's intended use.
Land or property is gifted with the intention that its nature is preserved for future generations. The RSPB in Holyhead, Wales are charging to park on the reserve which was gifted to the residents. Access to a lake in Wilmslow gifted as common land has been fenced off. Gifted land has been used for housing, roads and carparks. A hospital was reduced to a clinic and housing. Interpretations of the word 'benefit' has meant that legacies have been sold and the revenue regarded as a benefit.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the UK Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand you're concerned about use of public and gifted land but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. It is already possible, using restrictive covenants, to restrict the uses of land that is sold or gifted. Interpretations of the word "benefit" would be a matter for the courts. We can only accept petitions which call for actions that are the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
