What the petition asks

Swimming is an excellent life skill. More than 400 people drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer near-drowning experiences.
By getting all children to learn how to swim on an adequate level will lower the risk of drowning.
Teaching times state

Drowning is the third highest cause of death in children in the UK

More than 60 children drown during the summer every year in the UK, yet the majority of these deaths are likely to have been preventable.

33% of parents were confident that their child knew how to be safe near water

It is possible to drown in as little as 5cm of water.

With this information we should teach all children this valuable skill

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the UK Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

All schools in England and wales must already provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. You can find out more here:

We aren't sure what further action you'd like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

You could start a new petition stating clearly what you'd like the UK Government or Parliament to do.
