What the petition asks
This petition is for the countless victims that suffer domestic violence/abuse at the hands of their partner and are trapped in a marriage by archaic laws.
Forcing them to pay for a divorce and go through more distress during the process or to stay married and continue to suffer.
Forcing them to pay for a divorce and go through more distress during the process or to stay married and continue to suffer.
As per https://www.gov.uk/how-to-annul-marriage
A marriage can be annuled if;
1. It was never legally valid (‘void’)
2. It was legally valid, but meets one of the reasons that makes it ‘voidable’
You can annul a marriage for a number of reasons, such as:
you did not properly consent to the marriage - for example you were forced into it
I propose that an additional reason be added:
you have been a victim of domestic violence/ abuse.
As no one should have to suffer domestic violence/ abuse.
