If UK schools close, provide food vouchers for children on free school meals

What the petition asks

If the UK schools have to close due to coronavirus, I propose that all families of children who receive free school meals are issued with food/shopping vouchers in order to ensure that they have enough food and other essentials to see them through.

I work in a school with a high proportion of low income families and I am genuinely worried about how they will feed their families if the schools close. The food banks will help, but there will be nowhere near enough to help all those who need it. These families will not have budgeted for this and will certainly struggle, as will a lot of families.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Since you started your petition the Government has announced the closure of schools and colleges, and has said that, to support children eligible for free school meals, schools will be able to provide meals or vouchers for supermarkets or local shops: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/schools-colleges-and-early-years-settings-to-close
