To provide the students who private rent accommodation to have the same rights

Rejected 12 signatures

What the petition asks

Allow students in contracts with private letting agents to cancel contracts early as they no longer have a need for the accomadation they are paying for and therefore being penalised for following government guidance
Privately rented students are placed at a disadvantage for renting directly with private landlords. Whereas, university students who dwell in university accommodation do not pay rent. The same rights should be applicable to the privately rented students. The global catastrophe applies directly to all students and it is absurd that private rented accommodation do not have the same rights.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

Suspending payments for rent or ending a tenancy early is a matter for individual landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

The Government has published an FAQ for university students on Covid-19, which includes advice on accommodation costs: https://dfemedia.blog.gov.uk/2020/04/09/university-students-covid19-faq/
