What the petition asks

Place statues of Black figures who were vital to the abolition of Slavery in Britain’s largest colony, Jamaica. Including Queen Nanny and the Windward Maroons, Tacky and The Coromantee, The Maroons of Cudjoe’s Town & Samuel Sharpe. Statue placement to be shared between London, Bristol & Liverpool.

Jamaica officially became a British colony in 1670. From that point on, Jamaican history is intertwined with Britain until the independence in 1962. Black influential figures who played a direct role in the abolition of slavery are to be celebrated.
Britain once celebrated slave owners in the form of statues, wouldn’t it be great to celebrate Black figures who fought for liberation in the once largest colony of Britain which oversaw the death and destruction of Black people for profit?

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

The Government is not responsible for the erection of statues. This is a matter for individual local authorities or private land owners where statues would be located.
