Change the names of streets in Liverpool that were named after slave traders

Rejected 10 signatures

What the petition asks

We are asking to change the names of streets in Liverpool which are named after slave traders; Parr Street, Gladstone Road, Sir Thomas Street, and Penny Lane as this is a blatant glorification of these men.
Many streets in Liverpool are named after slave traders in the UK. Although British slavery is not taught within the education system, citizens of this city are very aware of Liverpool's involvement in the slave trade and are appalled by the glorification and the simultaneously brazen attempts to erase the atrocities these men and this city committed.

This is not to erase the city's history but to rather acknowledge it in our systems and not hold these men in such high esteem.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

Decisions about individual historical monuments, statues, plaques and street names are a matter for the local authority in which they are located and private landowners, not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want to raise concerns about a particular historical monument or statue, or request a new monument or statue be erected, you should contact your local authority about this.

The Local Government Association has published an advice note to help councils work to ensure all sections of the community feel heard by decision-makers and each other: https://www.local.gov.uk/topics/community-safety/statues

We have published the following petitions, which you might like to sign:
