Police to stop identifying the gender of victims by the sex of the victim
Rejected
14 signatures
What the petition asks
This means asking family for the gender identity of potential victims of hate crimes/Homeside or the victim themselves (where possible) to avoid misgendering in police reports. We also ask that the preferred name be used, even if it is not yet legal.
This is a problem as even if victims have a gender recognition certificate, they can still be misgendered by police, and Transgender people need to be respected in both life and death.
Why it was rejected
It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.
The recording of the personal information of victims of crime is an operational decision for police forces, not the UK Government or Parliament.
In any event, under the Equality Act 2010, discrimination and harassment against someone on the basis of their gender reassignment, which can include mis-gendering, is prohibited. This applies to police forces in the same way it does to any employer.
