Implement a Deposit Return Scheme for glass and plastic in 2021

Closed 730 signatures

What the petition asks

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has been consulting on the implementation of a Deposit Return Scheme for glass and plastic.
Such a scheme is not currently expected to go live until 2023.
The Government should accelerate the implementation and bring it forward to 2021.
This year people have left mounds of rubbish at public spaces and beauty spots across the UK and beyond.

Many studies have reported the presence of microplastics not only in our oceans but also in treated tap and bottled water. This raises questions and concerns about the impact that polluted drinking-water has on human health.

More recently, microplastic pollution has been found to cause significant damage to organisms in the soil, adversely affecting ecology and soil fertility.
