Tighter laws for hate crimes and discrimination against minority groups

What the petition asks
As it stands hate crimes are not punished in ways that they should be and it feels as if people who discriminate are being let off light. I propose that there should be harsher penalties for those who commit hate crimes in order for people to learn right from wrong.
Minority groups should be able to feel safe in our community but they are unable to feel this way as there are still people who commit hate crimes and discriminate against these groups. Changes should be made in order for our society to become a better place for all and to deter others from committing crimes as such.
Why it was rejected
It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.
Petitions need to request a clear action by the Government or House of Commons.
We understand that you are concerned about hate crime, but it's not clear what you want the Government to do about this.
Criminal courts are already required to treat offences more seriously where they are shown to be aggravated on the basis of race, religion, sexuality, transgender status, or disability. Deciding what action to take in specific cases is a matter for the police, Crown Prosecution Service and courts, not the Government or House of Commons.
We could accept a petition calling for minimum sentences for hate crimes to be increased, or for hate crime provisions to be extended to all protected characteristics, to increase protections against hate crimes.
