MP's should donate their pay rises to aid charities within their constituencies

Rejected 13 signatures

What the petition asks

In light of the catastrophic impact of Covid-19 on the workforce of the UK, we ask that all MPs donate the entirety of their upcoming payrise to charities, food banks and other aid services within their constituencies to help support the unemployed within their electorate
It is abhorrent that anyone should become wealthier during this time of global crisis, doubly so if that wealth comes out of public coffers. We therefore ask that the UK's elected representatives within Parliment show solidarity with the people of our nation and forgo their impending payrise, instead donating these funds to charities that support those whose livelyhoods have been lost because of the consequences of Covid-19

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

The UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for setting MPs' pay. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government.

You can find out more about IPSA here: https://www.theipsa.org.uk/about-us/.

Decisions on charitable donations are a personal matter for MPs.
