Petition · past parliament
To award the George Cross to the National Health Service collectively.
Rejected
21 signatures
What the petition asks
Make the award collectively to the NHS, and personally, posthumously to those NHS staff who have died of Covid19 caught during the course of their duties. Alternatively recommend to Her Majesty the Queen that she make the award.
The George Cross is awarded for "acts of the greatest heroism or for most conspicuous courage in circumstance of extreme danger" not in the presence of the enemy. It has been awarded collectively to the people of Malta and the Royal Ulster Constabulary. It is very appropriate in the case of the NHS during the present pandemic. I want the British Government to award the GC, or, if the award is the prerogative of Her Majesty the Queen, to recommend that she does so.
Why it was rejected
It was about honours or appointments, which petitions cannot cover.
