What the petition asks
UK parliament to consider the weight and importance of introduction of an optional Ukrainian language GCSE exam in the UK before approving it to the ministry of education.
This is very strategically important decision which will be very useful in order to build up closer relationship with Ukraine.
This is very strategically important decision which will be very useful in order to build up closer relationship with Ukraine.
There is a vast Ukrainian diaspora in the UK. Ukrainians started settling down on British shores at the beginning of the twentieth century. Another huge wave of Ukrainians started coming over to work and study since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The numbers of Ukrainians are continuing to grow. They are seriously contributing to British economy and Ukraine and UK have just signed a free trade and strategic partnership agreement which makes this two countries very close partners and allies.
Why it was rejected
It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.
Schools are required to offer at least one modern foreign language to Key Stage 4 students (which is when people take their GCSEs), but schools are not required to offer a particular modern language.
Deciding which language or languages to offer to GCSE students is a matter for individual schools, not the Government or House of Commons.
