What the petition asks
Ban the use of lead weights in fresh water fishing, making companies accountable for products that are non-toxic.
Lead weights can be damaging to the environment & there were talks of banning leads. This is because in the event of your line snapping or as some promote the ‘drop the lead to protect and catch a fish’ approach, these are then left at the bottom of the water.
This can be harmful to the water, and it’s a well-known fact that some birds drive down picking up stones (lead by mistake) swallow to help break down food in there stomach which in turn their acid will break down the lead poisoning the bird. There have been studies found showing the increase over time in the levels of lead in the blood of both birds & fish in areas of highly fished waters.
