What the petition asks
Misleading voters, including by the use of incorrect or false information, is an abuse of their democratic rights. To protect democracy there must be an independent body with the remit to determine if MPs' have misled or lied to the public. This body must be free from MP and Party influence.
The current bodies charged with oversight of MPs’ conduct are not fit for purpose. We call for the establishment of a new oversight body that:
-Is independent of all party and MP influence
-Has a remit to investigate and determine if MPs have misled the public
-Has the power to force MPs to publicly apologise for and correct misleading information
-Has the power to bar MPs from serving in public office where necessary
-Has the power to refer MPs to the Crown Prosecution Service (for a new offence of misleading the public)
