What the petition asks
Belarus might be distant, and largely overlooked, but it needs our support in its desire to effect democratic transition. The eventual aim would be to obtain free and fair elections, under international auspices.
Last year, President Lukashenko claimed a ‘landslide’ re-election, which was widely contested, including through repeated popular protest. Beatings and imprisonments have continued throughout the winter. People are genuinely afraid.
In spite of daily hardships, spring brings renewed hope. The opposition has called for a day of protest on 25 March 2021.
Moscow observes, and imposes upon Minsk punishing financial terms – partly the result of economic sanctions against the government.
