Remove the automatic right to full UK citizenship by marrying a UK citizen

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

Some people arrive here with the intention to marry a UK citizen in order to gain citizenship and social security benefits. Others try to get their offspring married to a UK citizen for the same reason. It's big business puts a huge strain on the taxpayer. It must stop.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about existing eligibility for UK citizenship for people married to a UK citizen, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

People married to a British citizen must meet a number of other conditions in order to be eligible to apply for British citizenship. You can read about eligibility to apply for citizenship if your spouse is a British citizen here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-citizenship-spouse

We could accept a petition calling for these rules to be changed, but it would need to be clear how you wanted these rules to be changed.
