Stop the creation of the football Europe super league.

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

If the European Super League is given the go-ahead, the balance of competitive football in Europe and its subsequent domestic leagues in the continent would be significantly affected.

We want the UK government to do whatever is legally possible to prevent this from going ahead.
The revenue generated in leagues such as Premier League would take a big hit and would be damaging for football in the continent.

The formation of the league will take the focus away from other leagues, and will afflict the smaller clubs as it's the big clubs that largely drive revenues for domestic club competitions.

Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit. The creation of this league will destroy domestic football & be the death of lower league clubs.

Why it was rejected

The UK Government or Parliament was already taking the action it asked for.

We understand you're concerned about English clubs joining the proposed European Super League, however since you started your petition the Government has clearly expressed its opposition to the plans and the six participating English clubs have all withdrawn, as you may know.

On Monday 19 April the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP said that he was appalled by the announcement that a handful of clubs are proposing to form their own breakaway European league, ands said the Government would not hesitate to protect one of our greatest national institutions: football. The Culture Secretary said that the Government would back the football authorities to stop this move, and if the football authorities couldn’t act, the Government would. The Culture Secretary said the Government would "put everything on the table to prevent this from happening."

Further, on 19 April the Government announced a 'Fan-led review of football governance', which will explore ways of improving the governance, ownership and financial sustainability of clubs in English football, building on the strengths of the football pyramid.
