Remove VAT from environmentally-friendly products
Rejected

What the petition asks
Many green products products are relatively new to the market and so cost effective manufacturing processes are not yet available, and so some of this cost is passed on to consumers. In addition, these products are sold in smaller volumes because people are reluctant to switch to a green alternative
Price is at the forefront of any consumer's mind when selecting a product. Environmentally friendly products are often more expensive that the 'regular' equivalent. Consumers are therefore required to pay extra for the benefit of the environment.
Removing VAT from environmentally friendly products would reduce the price difference between 'regular' products and their environmentally friendly alternatives. This would encourage consumers to switch to the environmentally friendly product.

Why it was rejected
It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We understand that you are concerned about the environment, but it's not clear what you mean by "environmentally-friendly products".
You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. For example, we could accept a petition calling for products that are recyclable, or certified as being carbon neutral, to be exempted from VAT.
