What the petition asks
Cancel plans to strip the Electoral Commission of it's powers to prosecute law breaking & scrap plans to have a political committee regulate it's strategy and policy.
For the Commission to work properly, it needs to be completely independent & be able to punish those who break election laws
For the Commission to work properly, it needs to be completely independent & be able to punish those who break election laws
The Government announced plans to strip the Electoral Commission of the power to prosecute law breaking and to have a Parliamentary committee decide what it should do
This will undermine both it's impartiality, and it's ability to hold people to account for breaking electoral law
At a time when democracy is under threat all over the world, undermining an independent body that protects how British elections work, and making it potentially subject to political interference is a backwards step
