Hold a referendum on the monarchy

Closed 687 signatures

What the petition asks

A referendum must be held before another coronation.

The monarchy is increasingly divisive. Its members are overindulged & often poorly behaved. It costs too much.
A hereditary 'king' is undemocratic and unaccountable. The opaque 'Queen's consent' process, still in use, has been used to vet over 1,000 draft laws & obtain exemptions from eg anti-discrimination laws passed in the 1970s and in 2010.

We'll keep the buildings for tourists. We'll keep the Crown Estate & Duchies for the nation. Charitable donations will still be made; Britain is generous. We could elect a ceremonial & diverse council, or a president, or just have parliament. We'll all have equal legal rights.

To achieve a better, fairer, more just society, we must join the 21st century & leave the archaic concept of monarchy in the past.

No king without consent. We must have a vote.

Please sign & share. It's time to speak up.
