Increase legal penalties for those convicted of online racial abuse

Closed 46 signatures

What the petition asks

In light of the aftermath of the Euro 2020 final, some of the hate we've seen on social media directed at England’s players has shocked us to the core. Being passionate about sports doesn't give one the right to abuse someone. There's no place for racism in sports, the workplace, or in life.
The government should work with the footballing authorities to do more about racist abuse, online, offline, and from all sports. It should require social media platforms to ban all those posting racial abuse from their platform for life and to do more to remove all racist comments. There should be tougher legal sanctions for those convicted of online racial abuse and hate speech.
