What the petition asks

We want the government to increase the amount of money that is given to public transport in order to reduce bus fares (specifically for secondary school and university students). We hope that this will help to reduce carbon emissions by encouraging more young people to use the bus services.

We would like the government to do this as we believe it will reduce carbon emissions and help with the global issue of climate change. The bus fares at the moment are roughly £450 per person per year which is the highest it’s ever been. We wish for the prices to be lower so that they are more affordable for low income or large families as we believe that everyone deserves the same opportunities.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We understand you would like to see the price of travelling on public transport go down, but it is unclear how the Government can increase the percentage of taxpayers money going towards public transport. The Department for Transport's budget is formed of tax payer contributions and income from private transport providers (e.g. train operators/franchised rail) and you can read more about where and how it is spent here:

You could start a petition calling for an increase to the budget of the Department for Transport if that is something you would like to see happen.
