What the petition asks

We are campaigning for Government to recognise a Nikah as a legal form of marriage, so that existing requirements for registering a marriage apply to a Nikah.

The Muslim Women’s Advisory Council has been helping and supporting women to fight for their rights and now want the government to take action. We are dealing with clients who are deprived lawful rights as a wife because their Nikah is not recognised as a legal marriage. Many women in Islamic marriage only discover their lack of official marital status when their marriage breaks down. Women are subjected to homelessness and financial struggles.
