Recognise the Myanmar National Unity Government

Closed 1,565 signatures

What the petition asks

The UK must recognise the government made up of elected lawmakers elected in 2020. It was ousted in a coup by a military junta, since when the junta has mounted what the UN calls "a brute force terror campaign" that has reportedly left over 1,500 people dead.
The UK and all our major allies condemned the coup and imposed sanctions on the junta. At the UN the UK was instrumental in securing a huge majority in the General Assembly for a resolution calling for the restoration of democracy and a Security Council statement calling for the upholding of "democratic institutions and processes". Moreover, the UNGA has voted to reject the junta's credentials. As an influential member of the UN and former colonial power, the UK must take a strong lead.
