Make the private slaughter and consumption of cats and dogs illegal

What the petition asks
We claim to have some of the highest levels of animal welfare, yet the private slaughter and consumption of cats and dogs is actually LEGAL in the UK so long as it is done ‘humanely’!
The Government claim to be “appalled by the prospect of dog and cat meat being consumed” - yet they have not closed this loophole in our jurisdiction. Although it is not culturally acceptable in the UK to eat cat and dog meat, the loophole in the law leaves cats and dogs in our country vulnerable. They are our family members and our friends and they deserve this basic right.
It would also set an example to countries that DO eat cats and dogs (in a bid to end the global cat and dog meat trade).
