Hold a referendum on the monarchy when the current monarch's reign ends

Closed 2,078 signatures

What the petition asks

When the current monarch's reign ends, we want a referendum on whether to abolish the monarchy.
We believe the Royal Family is unaccountable and inconsistent with the principle of meritocracy. The monarchy is unelected and undemocratic, and the public should get to decide whether to abolish it.

The Monarch is the head of the Armed Forces, the Church of England, and Parliament, and is the head of state of the British Overseas Territories, to which British subjects do not have an automatic right to live and work. While it is generally held that the Monarch does not exercise their sovereign powers to interfere in political matters, they have the ability to do so and we believe this in itself undermines trust in this country’s democratic institutions.
