What the petition asks
Increase the speed limit on motorways from 70 mph to 90 mph. Run public awareness campaign about rules of driving on motorways and the importance of sticking to these rules.
It is not the speed that causes accidents but careless driving. In spite of technological advances and safety measures 70mph speed limit has not changed for 57 years. Seat belts, crumple zones, air bags, ABS, etc. were introduced but speed limit has remained. Current speed limit and widespread lack of lane discipline makes the journey unnecessarily longer and does't prevent accidents. Careless driving and incorrect use of lanes causes danger, incidents of road rage and may result in accidents.
