Require social media platforms to introduce mandatory ID verification

Closed 544 signatures

What the petition asks

We would like the Government to require all social media apps to have a mandatory identity verification process in order for a person to be able to create an account and interact with others. For example, submission of a photographic ID. This would help improve online safety.
Online bullying and harassment is a huge problem in the UK and is out of control. There are insufficient regulations to stop trolling online and the laws to prosecute those who do it are unclear. This behaviour can lead to serious mental health problems and self-harm. People are freely able to make numerous accounts constantly using different new email addresses etc and have free rein to abuse and bully others online. Verification could help prove who is behind the trolling.
