Increase current regulations for imported dogs/pets into the UK

Rejected 21 signatures

What the petition asks

Impose mandatory testing for Rabies, Brucella (and other diseases) for dogs imported into the UK, and also parasitic treatment. Proof needs to be shown BEFORE importation. We have just seen a positive case of rabies in France and also positive Brucella Canis at our veterinary surgery.
The veterinary profession are seeing more of these zoonotic cases due to lack of testing. Public health is at risk and will only continue to get worse.
Members of our staff have all had to be tested to check they haven’t contracted Brucella, which was recently diagnosed in one of our patients. Brucella causes many nasty symptoms, of which can include infertility. Many people are rehoming dogs from abroad with no knowledge on the risk they are taking.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We are not sure what specific action you would like the Government to take. We understand you would like to see additional measures for importing dogs and pets into the UK, but there is already a legal requirement to provide proof of a rabies vaccination.

You could start a new petition calling for the Government to require a negative canine-brucellosis test for dogs before they are brought to the UK, if this is something you would like to see happen. You could also call for vaccinations against other diseases, but you would need to specify which diseases.
