What the petition asks
Increase Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) that working mums get when on maternity to 90% of their full wage for 9 months and then the reduced rate of SMP (the lower of 90% pay or £156.66) for a further 3 months to enable working mums to have a full year with their new born and not worry about money.
The first 6 weeks of being a new mum can be a blur, and many don't get to enjoy their baby like they should. To then have to worry about money once you go onto the lower rate of SMP, and only receive SMP for nine months, is unacceptable. New mums are bringing up the next generation of tax payers.
The amount new mums get in SMP should be increased, and the length of SMP extended from 9 to 12 months.
