What the petition asks
The UK Government should join with the Nordic nations who have called for the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes to be upheld for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The UK government and other countries have imposed a sanctions regime on Russia to encourage Russia to cease actions destabilising Ukraine or undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty or independence of Ukraine. This sanctions regime has been increased in scope over time. Adding a ban on Russian athletes’ participation in the Olympics would be consistent with further strengthening the sanctions.
Why it was rejected
It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.
