What the petition asks
Depleted Uranium shells constitute a major health hazard before and after their use. As well as being a source of harmful, ionizing radiation, it is highly toxic. Use of these in combat will lead to fragmentation and dissemination of this substance in urban areas. They should not be sent to Ukraine.
The Challengers 2's main armament uses the L30A1 120mm rifled gun. The standard ammunition for this is the L23A1 Armour Penetrating Fin Stabilised Discarding SABOT round with a tungsten-nickel-copper alloy.
It is entirely unnecessary and dangerous to send radioactive and toxic substances into combat, with long-term deleterious effects for people and the environment. The Government should reverse the decision to send Depleted Uranium shells to Ukraine.
