What the petition asks
We believe the process for getting an assessment for dyslexia is unfair and favours high income families.
Diagnostic assessments for dyslexia, should be free for children aged 7-19, in full-time education.
It can cost £600+ for an assessment. Many parents/carers can't afford this, and many schools will only help if child has a formal diagnosis.
Too few schools/LEAs will pay for the diagnostic assessment for dyslexia. Instead parents/careers have to pay.
Dyslexia is covered by the Equality Act 2010, yet without a formal dyslexia diagnosis many dyslexic children are not getting the help they need, such as extra tutor support and extra time in exams.
It can be extremely difficult to get an EHCP for dyslexic children without a formal diagnosis. This means a child can miss out on extra funding to help them learn.
