Restore full Independence to the Electoral Commission

Closed 1,800 signatures

What the petition asks

In 2022, the Government passed legislation to give ministers powers to be able to set the strategy and to guide the work of the Electoral Commission.

This needs to be repealed and revoked, and the Electoral Commission needs to regain its full independence from Government and Parliament,
Having Free and Fair Elections is paramount in any democracy

The reputation of the Electoral Commission as an independent, politically neutral and impartial organisation must be protected. The risks of with any one party having any power or influence over any part of it cannot be ignored.

This Legislation undermines democracy, undermines the sanctity of Free and Fair Elections, and undermines the founding principle that the Electoral Commission is independent, neutral and impartial
