Create a cross-party Commission on the future governance of England

Closed 116 signatures

What the petition asks

Accept the recommendation of the House of Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee to “bring forward … the establishment of a Bill to create a cross-party Commission on the future governance of England that is funded by and responsible to Parliament.”
The committee’s report of 31 October 2022 sets out very clearly “the urgent need for significant reform to the way that England is governed,” identifying six main areas of concern with local government in England:

1. Too complex
2. Too opaque
3. Too centralised
4. Ineffective and wasteful funding arrangements
5. Significant geographical inequalities
6. People feel disempowered
