Petition · past parliament
Ensure that Utility companies regularly check their gas meter records.

What the petition asks
Utility companies should be required to periodically check the meter (when a meter read is taken so little or no additional cost) and ensure that the meter type imperial or metric is correctly recorded on the providers IT systems.
There is a long standing issue with gas meters being changed from imperial to metric and the billing records are not updated on supplier systems. This results in an overbilling of almost 3x the correct amount. Given the cost of living crisis - vulnerable consumers are being overbilled.
Why it was rejected
It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.
It is the responsibility of individual energy suppliers to ensure that the information they have about customers is accurate, and the responsibility of Ofgem to take action where customers are affected by a failure of an energy supplier to achieve this. You may wish to contact your supplier or Ofgem if you have been affected by this issue.
