What the petition asks
Under the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act, the next General Election must be scheduled to be held no later than 28/01/2025.
We request that the Government confirms that the next election will be held by this date and the current Parliament will not exceed 5 years.
We believe it would not be democratic to extend the length of the current Parliament beyond 5 years.
There is currently nothing which prevents the law from being changed to allow the current Parliament to exceed 5 years. This could delay the date of the next General Election beyond what may ordinarily be considered acceptable to the majority of the public. We want the Government to confirm that this will not happen.
