Extend statutory nuisance laws to cover aircraft noise

What the petition asks
We call on the Government to extend the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to cover aircraft noise. Councils could then serve abatement notices to end noise harmful to human health.
In line with polluter pays, fines could generate revenue to help local communities to adapt.
Noise is a growing problem, with mounting evidence showing it negatively impacts educational performance and human health.
But current rules mean that once an airport is in place, there are no automatic restrictions to its operation, meaning it can be active 24 hours a day. There is no obligation on airports to help address this nuisance noise and in many cases, complaints go unanswered or unaddressed.
